This Program is guided through the Great Baltimore Fire and 1871 Fire House exhibits. Students examine primary documents, see two engines that fought the Great Fire, and view original footage by Thomas Edison to learn how 17 fire departments from 25 cities fought the third worst fire in American history.<\/span><\/p>\n

Students will learn how electricity flows through a circuit before building their own working telegraph key. In this lab, children will understand how telegraphs were used to communicate in emergency situations and see the practical applications of that technology in the museum\u2019s working Fire Alarm Office.<\/span><\/p>\n

This STEM program is all about the science of fire itself, different ways to put out a fire, and how to stop them from happening in the first place. Discover the scientific composition of a fire, why fireworks look so cool and why sometimes water is just more fuel for the fire. (available both in-person and virtually)<\/span><\/p>\n

THE FIRE RESCUE GAME<\/span><\/h4>\n

Duration: 30 minutes
<\/span>Grades: Pre-K to 3rd
<\/span>Cost: $3\/child; adults are free.<\/span><\/p>\n

Children wear mock fire gear and simulated breathing apparatus to learn about fire safety and how to react in a fire by practicing firefighter rescue techniques. Staying low in a dimly lit room, they then \u201crescue\u201d a teacher or chaperone from the \u201cburning building.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

1\/2 HOUR IN DISCOVERY ROOM<\/span><\/h4>\n

Cost: $30\/Group<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In the Discovery Room (included in the\u00a0BUCKET BRIGADE\u00a0program), students explore and learn with their hands, try on kid-sized firefighter gear, and play on a real fire engine.<\/span><\/p>\n

LUNCH SPACE<\/span><\/h4>\n

Enjoy a seated lunch in our Special Exhibits room (max occupancy of 38). Fridge available to store cold items. The museum does not provide\/sell any food or beverages nor are there any vending machines on site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

VISITING FIREFIGHTER OR UMD REPRESENTATIVE<\/span><\/h4>\n

Cost: $50\/Group<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Based on availability, a firefighter will visit with your group to speak about related career or education pathways and do a demonstration.<\/span><\/p>\n

BRUSH FIRE TANK ACTIVITY<\/span><\/h4>\n

Duration: 30 minutes
<\/span>Grades: Pre-K to 3rd
<\/span>Cost: $3\/child; adults are free.<\/span><\/p>\n

Students will be able to operate a real brush fire tank that firefighters would use to put out small fires in remote areas. Instead of a real fire, students will be able to spray water from the tank onto a wooden target. A great add-on to any outreach activity as well!<\/span><\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n
